Fair question, and here's a straight answer instead of "it depends." Where you land depends on your home and system, but here's the honest range.
$15,000–$20,000 installed for cooling only. The heat pump version of the same job runs $14,500–$16,000 after the $4,000 PSEG rebate, and it heats the house in winter too. Sized right for your home either way.
$20,000–$30,000. A complete new system with all-new ductwork, done start to finish.

The heat pump is your central air in summer and it heats the house in winter, off the ductwork you already have. Your existing heating system stays where it is, running your hot water and covering the coldest nights.
The rebate is $4,000 whether you are replacing one system or two. On a larger home needing two systems the heat pump premium is bigger, so the two land closer together, usually within a few hundred dollars either way. Two-system replacements run roughly $31,000 to $39,000. We will show you both numbers for your house before you decide anything.
